Industry: Roofing and Siding Wholesale Distributor
Number of employees: 200
Products in use: GFI WebMonitor™, GFI MailArchiver™
United Products Corp. is a wholesale distributor of exterior building materials with several locations throughout
the upper Midwest in the USA. The company was after an internet monitoring solution that would safeguard its
server and network from any potential web-borne viruses and malicious downloads, whilst also having the
ability to monitor their employees' browsing habits to ensure that they aren't wasting time on non-work related
websites. The company also wanted an email archiving solution to be able to store their emails in a central and
secure location. Having already tried and tested GFI products, United Products Corp. chose GFI WebMonitor
and GFI MailArchiver.
United Products Corp., a wholesale distributor, has around 200 employees and the company "wanted a
software product that would scan all web requests on our Microsoft ISA server for viruses and other malware.
We also wanted instant reporting on our users' web surfing history in a clear and easy to read format", said Mark
Hatfield, acting CIO and Network Engineer for United Products Corp. With this objective in mind, the company
decided to implement GFI WebMonitor, a web security, Internet monitoring and Internet access control
solution.
Mr. Hatfield explained that they took a look at other Internet monitoring products that were on the market
before deciding.
"We considered other vendors that provide the same features but their costs were outrageous. The GFI product
was the only one that satisfied all of our needs at a reasonable price. A lot of other products also had extreme
hardware requirements. We run GFI WebMonitor 4 for ISA on the ISA server itself so we didn't need to invest in
any additional hardware. This server supports 200 concurrent users."
"The other GFI product we use is GFI MailArchiver. We needed an email archiving solution and since we were
happy with the other GFI products that we use; we downloaded and tested it, then purchased it. Our GFI
MailArchiver software runs on a Hyper-V VM running Windows 2008 x64 and SQL 2008 x64, and even though
tech support said it was not supported, it runs great with no issues."
The installation and configuration ran without any hitches and both GFI WebMonitor and GFI MailArchiver
integrated seamlessly with the company's existing hardware and software structure.
“Our past experience with GFI was the main driver in deciding to test GFI MailArchiver for Exchange. We started with GFI WebMonitor 3 five years ago and later upgraded to GFI WebMonitor 4. We have been running GFI MailArchiver for Exchange for almost one year,” said Mr. Hatfield.
“GFI met all of our needs and the pricing was much less than that of the competition. We also downloaded and tested GFI WebMonitor for ISA server and GFI MailArchiver for Exchange before purchasing and both products were relatively easy to install and configure.”
“GFI products have not had any noticeable negative impact on our networks performance.”
The installation of GFI WebMonitor had immediate benefits for United Products Corp. as they were able to generate reports regarding Internet usage at the workplace. They were able to see which sites were being visited regularly and which sites needed to be blocked because of inappropriate content, thus reducing the amount of cyberslacking taking place. By scanning downloads from the Internet, GFI WebMonitor also reduced the risk of viruses and malicious downloads being downloaded onto the network.
Mr. Hatfield added: “We can instantly look at what websites a user has visited and how much time they spend each day surfing the web. GFI MailArchiver allows us to instantly look at, or recover, any emails sent or received at our company. We had a situation where users would send inappropriate emails and then delete them right away so there was no proof. GFI MailArchiver gives us the power to instantly reproduce any emails without digging through tape backups or in instances where the message may not even be on tape backup”.
“We are able to easily identify which users are spending too much time surfing the Internet for non-business related matters. We also can identify which websites are consuming the most Internet bandwidth and block them if they are non-business related. Once the products are properly installed and configured, they run great and need very little maintenance. They are also priced significantly lower than competitors, which is more important than ever in the current economy.”
